Safety tips & posting rules
Buying and selling safely
- Deal locally, in person. Most scams involve someone who can't meet face to face.
- Meet in a public place in daylight — a busy coffee shop, or the lobby of a police station where available. Bring a friend for big items.
- Inspect before you pay. Test electronics, check serial numbers, and look over vehicles with a mechanic.
- Never wire money, pay with gift cards or crypto, or send a deposit to someone you haven't met. No legitimate seller needs this.
- Beware of overpayment. If a buyer sends more than the price and asks for the difference back, it's a scam.
- Keep the conversation on the site. Your email stays private, and moderators can see reports in context.
- Rentals: view the place in person before paying anything, and be wary of a landlord who is "out of the country".
Posting rules
- Post each item once, in the right category. Renew it instead of reposting.
- No illegal, stolen, counterfeit or recalled goods, prohibited weapons, drugs, adult services, or anything that breaks the law.
- Some categories have their own rules (below). Post items only in the category made for them; for example, firearms belong in the Firearms section, never in general categories.
- No misleading listings, bait-and-switch pricing, or links to other sites to collect payment.
- Use your own photos and a truthful description.
- Be respectful in messages. Harassment gets accounts suspended.
Listings in moderated categories are checked by a moderator before they appear, and again after any edit.
Posts that break these rules may be removed and accounts suspended without notice. If you see one, use Report this listing on the post. When several members report the same post, it's hidden until a moderator reviews it.
Rules for Sporting Goods
Every firearms listing is checked by a moderator before it appears.
• Only Non-Restricted and Restricted firearms may be listed. Prohibited firearms and prohibited devices (for example over-capacity magazines) are not allowed and will be rejected; repeat attempts get the account suspended.
• Include at least 2 clear, well-lit photos of the firearm itself, plus a close-up photo of the serial number. The serial number photo is seen only by moderators and must match the serial number you enter. The serial number is never shown to buyers.
• Buyers must hold a valid firearms licence for the class of firearm (a PAL, or an RPAL for restricted firearms).
• Non-Restricted: before the sale, the seller must check the buyer's licence and identity and get a reference number from the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program (online or 1-800-731-4000).
• Restricted: the transfer must be approved by the Canadian Firearms Program and the firearm registered to the buyer before they take possession.
• Handguns: since October 2022 most individuals can no longer acquire handguns in Canada (the national handgun freeze). Only list one for a buyer who qualifies for an exemption.
• Follow all federal, provincial and local laws for storage, transport and transfer. Meet in person; never ship a firearm to someone you haven't verified.
